More than Hungry… Me 2
By Langston Hughes1902–1967 Langston Hughes
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.
Mother America, are you ready for all your children to eat at the table or are you still ashamed? I am America, too. When Brother Langston Hughes wrote this, you could feel his pain from being placed in the back, but his hope for tomorrow. DMX said “y’all being eating long enough now, stop being greedy. Keep it real partner give to the needy. Ribs is touching dont make me wait or I will f*$k around and bite and snatch the plate.” The juxtaposition of these two lines are telling. America, which you choose the former or the latter? That is the “Great Debate,” if you understand.
Bottom Line: Eat well and Grow strong.
