The DARK within us!!
All are hypocrites. All of us. We all can be cruel, evil, selfish, and unforgiving from time to time (some of us more than others). What is scary is when we find that part of us; and to our surprise we find we like it. After playing the ‘good person role’ for so long, it feels good to cuss somebody out, hit somebody in the mouth, do something we know is wrong. The only problem is that shame that comes after you go this route. You probably feel horrible ad blame yourself and go out on a “good deed” binge.
Why is this? Sometimes we try too hard to be something we are not and cannot be. If for so long you pretend like things dont get you mad or that you never get tempted by your own lustful thoughts; eventually you will snap. Some snap and snap back, some snap and pop. The latter thought is the reason why we need to learn to be honest and real with ourselves.
The greatest lesson I learned from the Buddha was the theory of the middle way. The jist of this thought is never to be extreme on any measure. The main reason one should never be extreme or dogmatic on topics is because we all have a finite knowledge base. In short, this means what you are so sure you know for sure, maybe be inaccurate or flat wrong (e.g., it was a time, people tought they knew things for sure; such as, the world is flat. This was common knowledge until they discovered the concept of gravity and that it was possible for our planet to be circular in nature).
I have come to the conclusion that we are going to mess up some ways, so I stop trying to be perfect or being a people pleaser. Learn to let my emotions out instantly or pretty close to the moment. I found this reduced my blow-ups and allowed me to escape the realm of a dark side that even alarmed me.
Even more, I have learned to embrace my dark side. In fact, I have learned it is not a dark side when controlled, it is a necessary component to complete me as a full human being. I will not start trouble; in fact, I will try to stop it, if you start it. But if you push too far, it is necessary for self-preservation that I then stop it. And, I can and I will. But, this brings us back to the initial point of the dark side being unleashed. You will like it. You will like it a lot. It is a guilty pleasure to live with no rules, if only momentarily. The real issue is, can you snap back or do you pop. You are more likely to pop, if you do not get in touch with this side of yourself.
Bottom Line: We all have a dark side. It will come out in all of us at some time. Get in touch with this dark side so you can control it. Do not let it control you. It is good to be good; but, it is not wise to never be good all the time. There is a time for every thing (for everything). Knowing when the time is right to be good and not be good and acting accordingly is the difficult part. Good Luck, my friends.
